south universitySouth University is a proprietary university owned by Education Management Corporation (EDMC) with programs in business, health care, design, and legal and criminal justice. The institution was originally founded by John Draughon in 1899 as Draughon’s Practical Business College. It operated under the name Draughon’s Junior College until 1985, when the name South College was adopted to reflect its acquisition (in 1974) by the family of John T. South, III. The name was later changed to South University to reflect the institution’s accreditation to award degrees at the masters and doctorate level. In 2002, this name resulted in a legal dispute with Sewanee: The University of the South, which was founded in 1857 and had registered the name “The University of the South” with the U.S. Patent Office. Read more…
